IELTS Requirements for UK Universities (2025)
From Russell Group to post-1992 institutions — what score you realistically need and how band requirements differ by course level.
4 min read · Updated April 2025
Most UK universities require between IELTS 6.0 and 7.0 for undergraduate admission, and 6.5 to 7.5 for postgraduate programs. Requirements are set per faculty, not per institution — so a business school and an engineering department within the same university may have different minimums.
Typical Requirements by Institution Tier
| Institution Type | Undergraduate | Postgraduate | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oxford, Cambridge | 7.0–7.5 | 7.5–8.0 | Per-band minimums apply (no band below 6.5–7.0) |
| Russell Group (top 24) | 6.5–7.0 | 6.5–7.5 | Varies by faculty |
| Post-1992 universities | 6.0–6.5 | 6.0–6.5 | Some accept 5.5 with language support |
| Foundation / pre-sessional | 5.5 | 5.5–6.0 | English pathway programs |
| UK Student Visa | B2 CEFR | B2 CEFR | IELTS 5.5 minimum (not for visa alone) |
UK Student Visa (Tier 4) Language Requirement
The UK Home Office requires IELTS Academic from a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) approved centre for Tier 4 student visas. The minimum is IELTS 4.0 for below degree level and IELTS 5.5 for degree-level courses — but your university's academic requirement is always higher than the visa minimum.

Is IELTS 6.5 good enough for UK universities?
Yes — 6.5 is accepted by most UK universities for undergraduate and many postgraduate programs. Russell Group universities often require 6.5–7.0, with specific per-band minimums. Always check your target faculty's requirement directly.
Do UK universities accept IELTS General Training?
No. UK universities require IELTS Academic for admission. IELTS General Training is for immigration purposes and not accepted for university enrollment.
What is the minimum IELTS for a UK Student Visa?
The visa requirement (4.0–5.5 depending on course level) is always lower than the academic admission requirement. Your bottleneck is almost always the university's academic threshold, not the visa minimum.
