Australia uses a tiered English language proficiency system for immigration. Your IELTS score determines which proficiency level you hold — and each visa type requires a different level. Unlike Canada, Australia has four tiers: Functional, Vocational, Competent, and Proficient.

Can I get an Australian student visa with IELTS 6.0?
It depends on the course. Most undergraduate programs require 6.0 overall with no band below 5.5. Some courses (medicine, nursing, teaching) require 7.0 in all bands. Always check your specific institution and course requirement.
Is IELTS General Training accepted for Australian immigration?
Yes. The Department of Home Affairs accepts both Academic and General Training for all skilled migration visas. General Training is often the better choice for immigration rather than study pathways.
How much do higher IELTS scores improve my Australian PR points?
Competent English (6.0 each band) = 0 points for English. Proficient (7.0) = 10 points. Superior (8.0) = 20 points. Points can make a significant difference to your invitation ranking in Skilled — Independent (189) rounds.
