TOEFL vs IELTS in 2025: Which Test Should You Take?
The right choice is not about which test is easier — it's about which test your destination accepts and which format plays to your strengths.

TOEFL and IELTS are both globally recognised and accepted by most universities. The question of which one to take is less about difficulty and more about fit: format preference, destination country, and what skills you bring to the test.
The Format Difference That Matters Most
IELTS Speaking is a face-to-face interview with a trained examiner — a real human conversation. TOEFL Speaking involves recording responses to prompts delivered by a computer. For candidates who are confident conversationalists, IELTS is often the better choice. For candidates who feel more composed without a live examiner, TOEFL's format reduces anxiety.
IELTS Writing vs TOEFL Writing
IELTS Task 1 (Academic) asks you to describe a visual — a graph, diagram, or chart. TOEFL's integrated writing task asks you to read a passage, listen to a lecture, and then synthesise both in writing. For candidates comfortable with note-taking and synthesis, TOEFL's integrated task can be more manageable. For candidates who are strong at analytical description, IELTS Task 1 is often easier.
Preparation Strategy Differences
- IELTS prep: Cambridge practice books, band descriptor practice, face-to-face speaking practice
- TOEFL prep: ETS Official Guide, integrated tasks practice, note-taking under timed conditions
- Listening: IELTS uses diverse accents (Australian, British, North American) — TOEFL is primarily American English
- If you have done UK or Australian schooling, IELTS accents will feel more familiar
- If you have done US schooling or consume US media primarily, TOEFL accents will feel more natural
