TOEFL vs IELTS in 2025: Which Test Should You Take?

The right choice is not about which test is easier — it's about which test your destination accepts and which format plays to your strengths.

5 min read · 12 April 2025

TOEFL and IELTS are both globally recognised and accepted by most universities. The question of which one to take is less about difficulty and more about fit: format preference, destination country, and what skills you bring to the test.

The Format Difference That Matters Most

IELTS Speaking is a face-to-face interview with a trained examiner — a real human conversation. TOEFL Speaking involves recording responses to prompts delivered by a computer. For candidates who are confident conversationalists, IELTS is often the better choice. For candidates who feel more composed without a live examiner, TOEFL's format reduces anxiety.

IELTS Writing vs TOEFL Writing

IELTS Task 1 (Academic) asks you to describe a visual — a graph, diagram, or chart. TOEFL's integrated writing task asks you to read a passage, listen to a lecture, and then synthesise both in writing. For candidates comfortable with note-taking and synthesis, TOEFL's integrated task can be more manageable. For candidates who are strong at analytical description, IELTS Task 1 is often easier.

If you are applying to Canada for immigration, the choice is settled: IRCC only accepts IELTS (and CELPIP). For UK visa purposes, TOEFL is accepted for study admission but not for the Tier 4 student visa route, which requires IELTS from a UKVI centre.

Preparation Strategy Differences

  • IELTS prep: Cambridge practice books, band descriptor practice, face-to-face speaking practice
  • TOEFL prep: ETS Official Guide, integrated tasks practice, note-taking under timed conditions
  • Listening: IELTS uses diverse accents (Australian, British, North American) — TOEFL is primarily American English
  • If you have done UK or Australian schooling, IELTS accents will feel more familiar
  • If you have done US schooling or consume US media primarily, TOEFL accents will feel more natural
