Does the Format Affect Your Score?
Because the Reading texts differ, your Reading band score may differ between versions. Students who struggle with dense academic reading often score 0.5–1 band higher in General Training Reading. Writing scores are usually comparable since Task 2 is the same format in both and carries more weight.

Can I use General Training IELTS for university admission?
Generally no — most universities specify IELTS Academic. A few institutions accept General Training for undergraduate entry, but this is rare. Always check your specific institution's requirements before booking.
Is General Training IELTS easier to pass?
The Reading section is generally considered more accessible in General Training, which can lead to a higher Reading band. However, both versions use the same 0–9 scale, and institutions set their minimums accordingly. The overall test difficulty is comparable.
Can I switch from General to Academic or vice versa before the test?
You register for a specific version. If you need to switch, you would need to register again for a different test date. There is no last-minute switching.
