What TOEFL Score Do You Actually Need? A Simple Guide to 80, 90, 100, and 110+
Students often ask if a TOEFL score is good without first asking good for what. The useful answer depends on your destination and how selective it is.

A TOEFL score only makes sense in context. An 80 can be enough for one institution and too low for another. A 100 can feel safe in one application list and only borderline in another. That is why the question is not whether a TOEFL score is good. The question is whether it is strong enough for the places you care about.
What an 80 usually means
An 80 is often the lower edge of competitiveness for many undergraduate programs and some graduate options. It may be enough, but it rarely gives you room for error. If your target list includes selective universities, 80 is usually a floor, not a comfort zone.
What a 90 usually means
A 90 is where many students start to feel more stable. It often clears baseline language requirements and can make a broader list realistic. But it is still not automatically strong for highly selective programs.
What a 100 usually means
A 100 is a strong target because it often moves you out of the danger zone. It is the score range many serious applicants aim for when they want a competitive profile rather than just eligibility.
What 110 and above usually means
110 plus is excellent. At that level, English proficiency is unlikely to be the weak point in your file. If you are already close to 110, the real question becomes whether your time is better spent on the TOEFL or on the rest of your application.
How to choose your own target
- Find the minimum listed score for each institution on your shortlist.
- Add a small safety margin if the school is selective.
- Check section-level expectations when available, not just the total score.
- Use a realistic mini mock early so you know whether your target is close or still far away.
